Reading Architecture 01 // Beatriz Colomina: The 24/7 Bed launches a new supplementary series to the exhibition activities of Norma Space. Reading Architecture provides a space for open discussion about current texts in the field of architecture. Together with guests from among architects, theorists, and sociologists, we will seek and discuss themes influencing contemporary architectural practice. In the first meeting of Reading Architecture, we will read the text by Beatriz Colomina, which was published as part of the book Work, Body, Leisure – the catalog of the same-name Dutch pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2018. The theme of the pavilion opens questions about spatial configuration, living conditions, and the perception of the human body in a changing work ethos and work environment. Work, Body, Leisure seeks ways to facilitate new forms of creativity and responsibility within the architectural field in response to the increasing involvement of technology and automation. In the text 24/7 Bed, the bed is presented as horizontal architecture, accompanying the individual in changing work strategies following the rise of new communication and social media, as well as a new workplace transforming the nature of work itself. What is work today and why do we perform it? How are we influenced by the possibilities of the architecture that surrounds us, and how do our notions in turn incorporate back into our environment? What does it mean to work as an architect? The discussion is open to everyone. It is advisable to familiarize yourself with the text in advance – its full English version is available for download here. A working translation into Czech is also available – if you are interested in receiving it, please write to [email protected].
