Reading Architecture 03 / Stanislav Komárek: Nature and Culture is the third volume of the complementary series to the exhibition activities of Norma Space. Reading architecture provides a space for open discussion on current texts in the field of architecture. Together with guests from among architects, theorists, and other experts, we will seek and discuss themes influencing contemporary architectural practice.

"Whoever wandered in the forest and did not sing could be killed without warning, for his intentions were surely nefarious."1

The relationship between humans and nature has historically gone through many phases. From the original unity (or at least its ideal) to the separation of the human, the cultural as valuable and cultivated, as a cultivated component guarded against the wild nature - as was represented in the 19th century by the dark forces of the deep forest in the opening quote - to the romantic discovery of the aesthetics of desolate, remote landscapes or attempts for a new merging or at least balance with nature. These themes will also be opened in the debate about the book by Stanislav Komárek, which complements the lectures from the series Landscape and views the relationship between humans and nature through a scientific, biological, or culturally-anthropological lens. We will also talk about how we perceive landscapes, why some types of landscapes are more pleasant to us than others, and to what extent this is conditioned culturally or biologically. By expanding and anchoring basic concepts, we will gain more precise tools for debates about the relationship between humans and landscapes, architects or landscape architects, and their role in (de)shaping our surroundings.

The discussion is open to all. It is advisable to familiarize yourself with the text in advance - the book is available, for example, at the Municipal Library in Prague https://search.mlp.cz/cz/titul/priroda-a-kultura/2240400/.

Norma is a platform. It tests space through the coexistence of disciplines, people, and art. Practice conditions our view, theory sets the environment for critical discussion.
