Rick Sommerfeld leads the design-build program at the Colorado Building Workshop at the University of Colorado in Denver. He will serve as a Fulbright Specialist at the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University in Prague in April. His lecture will take place on April 11, 2024, at 6 PM at the Faculty of Architecture, CTU in lecture hall 155 Gočár.

Sommerfeld will be a co-moderator of the student scientific conference "School of Architecture 2024: Head and Hands," which will be held at the Faculty of Architecture on April 12 and will focus on teaching design-build projects in architecture schools.

Since the founding of the Colorado Building Workshop in 2009, Rick Sommerfeld and his students have designed and built more than 50 structures. These include affordable housing in the desert, infrastructure for national parks, accommodations for workers, and a field station on a nearly inaccessible island in Antarctica. The realizations have been published worldwide and have received numerous awards, including international ones.

Sommerfeld's educational vision for design-build focuses on integrated project realization. This requires students to work closely with engineers and consultants in the earliest design phases and test their ideas in light of the limitations given by context and program. He believes that this form of teaching enriches architectural education, strengthens the application of architectural theory, and fosters a combination of practical skills and authentic learning.
