Prof. Roger Caves is a prominent figure dealing with contemporary urban planning issues. He is currently active at the University of San Diego in the USA, but also collaborates with other institutions. He works in various areas related to housing, landscape planning, urbanism, and environmental studies. The diversity of his interests is highlighted by the fact that he has studied various fields. He earned his bachelor's degree in political science, graduated with a degree in urban studies from Old Dominion University, and holds a doctorate focused on urban relations and public policy from the University of Delaware. He was the founding director of the Institute for “Smart Communities” in California. He is the author of numerous publications on housing, community development, alternative structures, local policies, direct democracy, and public services. Among his well-known works is the book Land Use Planning: The Ballot Box Revolution from 1992. He edited books such as Exploring Urban America – An Introductory Reader and Encyclopedia of the City. He is currently working on the fourth edition of the aforementioned book Planning in the USA, of which he is a co-author, and collaborates with Dr. Fritz Wagner on viable communities.
