VÁCLAV MAGID
THEORY OF AVANT-GARDE IN CONTEXTS

On the occasion of the release of the Czech translation of two books by Peter Bürger – Theory of Avant-Garde (1974) and The Aging of Modernity (2001) – the editor of the publication, Václav Magid, will present and reflect on the basic motifs of the theoretical project of this German literary scholar, who left a significant mark on the theory and criticism of contemporary visual art. Bürger's characterization of the avant-garde as an attack on the autonomous institution of art, aimed at returning art to life practice, as well as his critique of post-war neo-avant-gardes, still provoke polemical responses today.
