The last part of the autumn lecture series will bring us back to Plzeň The theme of this year's autumn lecture and discussion series "Shaping the City," prepared by the Pěstuj prostor association in collaboration with the West Bohemian Gallery in Plzeň, was the historical circumstances, cultural conditions, and significant personalities associated with the shaping of cities and the emerging modern architecture. After excursions highlighting the emergence of modern Hradec Králové, Zlín, and Brno, we return "home" in the final episode. The lecture "Urban and Architectural Development of Plzeň from the Beginning of the Nineteenth Century to the Mid-Twentieth Century" will be delivered on Wednesday, December 18, at 6 PM in the lecture hall of the Semler Residence on Klatovská Street in Plzeň by Mgr. Tomáš Bernhardt, historian and curator of the West Bohemian Museum in Plzeň, and Ing. arch. Petr Domanický, architectural historian and curator of the architecture collection at the West Bohemian Gallery in Plzeň. The urban development of Plzeň underwent significant changes during the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century, which greatly influenced the appearance of the city. Historian Tomáš Bernhardt will recall the personality of the mayor Martin Kopecký, who contributed to the modernization of Plzeň in the second quarter of the 19th century and laid the foundations for its industrial expansion. The industrial development was further supported by the arrival of the railway in Plzeň in 1862, which connected the city to important trade routes. Architect Petr Domanický will then touch on the urban changes in the city in the 20th century, when Plzeň expanded to include adjacent municipalities, creating what was known as Greater Plzeň (1924). This step enabled planned development and modernization of the city in the manner of European metropolises. In addition to the centennial anniversary of the city’s expansion, Petr Domanický will also highlight the crucial role of the municipal building authority, which this year marks its 150th anniversary since its establishment. Admission to the event is 60 CZK. Tickets will be available on-site and in advance at Plzeňská vstupenka. The lecture and discussion series "Shaping the City" was prepared by the Pěstuj prostor association in collaboration with the West Bohemian Gallery in Plzeň and with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the city of Plzeň, the State Fund for Culture of the Czech Republic, and the Czech Architecture Foundation.
