The second part of the lecture and discussion series "Shaping the City", prepared by the association Grow Space in collaboration with the West Bohemian Gallery in Plzeň, will offer those interested in the history and architecture of Czech and Moravian cities the story of the emergence of modern industrial Zlín. A city that unmistakably resembles the American industrial metropolises of the time. The lecture by historian Mgr. David Valůšek, director of the State District Archive in Zlín, will take place on Wednesday, November 20 at 18:00 in the lecture hall of the Semler Residence on Klatovská Street in Plzeň.
The urban development of Zlín in the first half of the 20th century was significantly influenced by the Baťa company, which created a modern industrial city here. From the collaboration of Tomáš Baťa with architect František Lydie Gahura came a city that combined industrial, residential, and public spaces in close proximity. Characteristic features included regular blocks of low-rise Baťa houses set in greenery, as well as modern factory buildings made of reinforced concrete and significant public buildings like the Grand Cinema or the administrative skyscraper No. 21 by architect Vladimír Karfík.
This thoughtful urbanism transformed the rural Zlín into an example of a modern industrial city. The lecture Zlín – An American City in Moravia will discuss how easy and straightforward this path was.

Mgr. David Valůšek is an archivist and historian who has been working at the State District Archive in Zlín since 1997. He primarily focuses on the regional history of Zlín from the 18th to the 20th century. For example, he is the author of a publication about the Zlín Evangelical Church and a co-author of the book History of Zlín Cemeteries. He was the chief editor of the two-volume History of the City of Zlín published in 2023.
