The newly built library in Děčín has risen on the site of a swimming restaurant from the 1960s, which was demolished due to its hazardous condition. Following this, the library also gained the name "Atlantik". The exceptionally attractive environment of the Elbe Valley attracted architect Tomáš Šantavý from the Design Studio for Architecture and Civil Engineering s.r.o. to create a distinctive contemporary architecture, whose purpose would be evident at first glance. He decided on a structure with softly shaped organic forms and a facade made of fiber-cement facade panels Cembrit Cembonit, which are characterized by their natural appearance with a pleasantly matte surface. The muted colors of the outer shell were enlivened by colorful "spines of books" bearing the names of prominent Czech writers. The building, which serves both the residents of the city and visitors arriving by boat on the Elbe, as well as cyclists using the busy Elbe cycle path, was put into operation in 2012.

Flood Zone
Since the construction plot of the library is part of the flood area of the Elbe River, the building was constructed on pillars. Only the information center and garages were placed on the first above-ground floor, which can be quickly evacuated if necessary. The actual library is located on the second and third floors, where water cannot practically reach. The highest fourth floor is surrounded by a terrace with a beautiful view of the Elbe Valley, serving as an educational facility that conducts professional training and organizes cultural events. The basement was designated for public hygiene facilities, which must be deliberately flooded with clean water in the event of an incoming flood and closed with armored doors. This ensures static balance of pressure and prevents damage from sewer backup.
This year's flood tested the proposed solution, which proved to be fully functional.

Interior of the Building
The interior design does not conceal the construction materials, primarily exposed concrete and a lot of wood, complemented by strong colors of natural linoleum. The technical installations are also visible, similarly painted in colors. Facing the Elbe Valley is a fully glazed wall, allowing for beautiful views.

Ventilated Facade
The effort to have the building with the lowest possible energy losses led the architects to choose a ventilated facade system, which allowed the use of a relatively thick layer of insulation. The wall structure is thus composed of concrete, thermal insulation, an air gap, and Cembonit boards in Sand color. The boards are mounted on an aluminum grid, attached with rivets. The rivets have heads in the color of the facade boards. "Working with Cembrit Cembonit boards fulfilled our idea of what material for modern architecture should look like, and we will definitely use it in our future constructions." said Ing. arch. Šantavý.

The project studio for architecture and civil engineering Ltd. specializes in reconstructions. Significant realizations include, for example, the reconstruction of the Schwarzenberg and Salm Palace at Hradčanské náměstí in Prague, the National Memorial on Vítkov in Prague, the Žofín building on Slavic Island in Prague, Charles Bridge in Prague, and the pilgrimage site of Velehrad in Moravia.
"We tend, when we add or integrate a new part to an original historic building, to resolve it in a contemporary architectural expression. In such cases, using modern materials with a natural appearance, like Cembonit boards, can be an interesting solution for us."

Cembrit Cembonit Facade Boards
Cembrit Cembonit is a solid facade board with an authentic natural appearance, emphasized by light variations in shade across the surface of the board, which create various light reflections on the facade, coming even closer to a purely natural material. Over time, these slight nuances develop as the surface ages naturally. The manufacturing process of colored boards ensures a unique surface finish that makes them resistant to external moisture and dirt. The composition of the board guarantees a long-lasting and durable facade.
Cembonit facade boards are available in 11 subtle color shades. They are intended for the final layer of ventilated facades, cladding cornices, columns, ceilings, etc. Their use is not limited to exteriors, but their excellent mechanical properties also apply indoors.

Various Anchoring Options
Cembrit facade boards can be installed on various types of supporting grids and structures. Wooden or metal supporting grids made of aluminum or steel can be used, as well as very popular combined grids.
The boards can be anchored either with visible anchoring using screws or rivets, or with hidden anchoring and gluing. The supply of facade boards includes anchoring material - screws, rivets, and rubber backing strips. Cembrit Cembonit boards are complemented by a complete range of accessories that ensure simple and easy installation, longer lifespan, and an attractive final appearance.

Support for Architects
Cembrit a.s. offers support from its technicians, who are ready to assist with both the facade detail solutions and to provide a free calculation of material consumption, or assist in the realization of the project to achieve the best possible result.

Fibre Cement - Natural Raw Materials
Cembrit facade boards are made exclusively from environmentally friendly natural raw materials. The basic raw materials for the production of fibre cement include cement, mineral fillers, cellulose, and non-toxic organic fibers, along with a small amount of water. Due to the use of purely natural materials, the boards are fully recyclable and align with sustainable development trends.
