A completely new color system and series of color samples, StoColor System, was developed by a team of architects and designers from the StoDesign studio. |
The new metric system of color shades, StoColor System, offers completely new and broad possibilities for color compositions in architecture. The color sample includes 1,000 color shades for facades, 225 shades specifically designed for interiors, 240 shades of paints and glazes, and 65 historically and culturally significant colors. Get inspired by systematically selected color shades and utilize the new color system designed with user-friendliness and aesthetics in mind.
Colors differentiate, convey messages, and aid in orientation. This is also true - if not primarily - in the context of architecture. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully consider the treatment of material colors on one hand and coatings (plasters, paints, lacquers, and glazes) on the other. Color systems from building material manufacturers are very useful in this regard, as the selection of colors is subject to technical and economic limitations. What is possible, for example, in printing colors (CMYK), cannot be transferred 1:1 into the world of building colors. Thus, color design must be carried out using specific tools. The updated sample StoColor System perfectly fulfills this role thanks to its holistic approach and wide range of tools.
Sto has launched a completely new series of sample books and color boxes along with the new StoColor System designed for professional and effective search for the color concept of architectural works. |
Peter Appenzeller and Antonio Romano from the StoDesign studio were responsible for the development of the new StoColor System. Their goal was to bring a holistic concept that could be used sustainably and that would meet both analytical (they consider brightness and saturation the ideal way to search for color combinations) and emotional (they prefer working directly with color samples) personality types. Peter Appenzeller, head of the German branch of StoDesign, explains what motivated this step: “We wanted to find a contemporary answer for seeking color harmonies. Existing color systems focus on monochromatic composition, but this harmony has its limits and sometimes appears dull. In our new StoColor System, we overcome this limitation: the intensity and brightness of the color tone are set in relation to the other color tones and other colors.”
The StoColor System is logically structured, easy to combine, and offers "recipes" for working with colors, compositions, and simplifies the search for color harmony. Sto's new color system includes 1,000 color shades for facades, 225 shades specifically designed for interiors, and 240 shades of paints and glazes. It also includes a number of historically and culturally significant colors.

The primary and most commonly used will be the large striped fan with 1,000 facade color shades, including white or black shades, a neutral gray range, and eight colored gray ranges. This fan also includes 65 historically or culturally significant color shades. Incorporating historical color tones into the contemporary system creates valuable accents and expands the spectrum of color tones that can be combined.
The StoColor System sample includes 1,000 fully colored individual sheets in DIN A6 format, with separating tabs in colored frames for easier handling. When designing collages and extensive color schemes, A6 sheets are optimally supported by six separate compartments of the StoColor System Edition.
