Mělník

On the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of the death of Saint Ludmila, an application will be launched in which you will be able to try out the unusual statue of Grandmother Saint Wenceslas. The statue does not take the form of a typical figure, but invites interaction, reflection, and a look into the future. Therefore, the authors will first introduce visitors to the artistic installation using a mobile application.

Using Augmented Reality (AR) technology, it will be possible to see the work on-site exactly as it will appear in reality, including moving water. The model will be introduced to visitors by the designers Anna Cisariková and Pavel Uličný. For the tour, a smartphone or tablet with an updated Android system will be needed. The statue will be presented on Saturday, September 11, and then at the harvest festival in Mělník on September 19, always between Mělník Castle and the Church of St. Peter and Paul. From the launch, the model will be freely accessible on the city of Mělník's website so that everyone can view it at home or, even better, on-site where the statue is designed to be.

The Palm of Saint Ludmila is an artistic installation commemorating the noble personality of Saint Ludmila, who was born probably in the area of Mělník's Pšov. The authors symbolically designed a palm full of water to remind people of Ludmila's care for the nation and her grandson, Saint Wenceslas. At the same time, the harmoniously undulating surface refers to the moral impulses that still resonate in our culture today. A water element will be created, unique for its harmonious waves. According to the authors, such an element will be the only one of its kind and will subtly support the uniqueness of the Mělník hill. The work, The Palm of Saint Ludmila, emerged from a competition for the Statue of Saint Ludmila announced by the city of Mělník in 2020.

The authors add that the jury in the competition was particularly impressed by the proximity of Saint Ludmila. Both the physical closeness of the statue to people and her legacy to our times. "We wanted to capture the strength of Ludmila's personality and engage passersby in the very story of her life. It will not be an ordinary statue, but a symbolic palm with a water mirror that will react to passersby," explain their intention the architects of the winning project.

Saint Ludmila is one of the most significant figures in our history. In 882, she was baptized with her husband, Prince Bořivoj I, directly by the hands of the Slavic missionary Methodius, and she was the first to embrace Western Christianity, thereby influencing our direction up to the present day. After disputes with her daughter-in-law Drahomíra, she was murdered at the fortified settlement of Tetín in 921. Her remains were transported to Prague by her young grandson Wenceslas in 925. Saint Ludmila is regarded as one of the most significant women in our history due to her legacy.
