The Quarry Life Award competition, which we informed you about earlier, is in full swing. Measurements and analysis of animal species are taking place in the quarries and gravel pits of Českomoravský cement and Českomoravský štěrk. As part of one of the projects, we also welcomed the first school classes here.

Currently, the national jury has selected 5 advancing projects from 25 submitted entries. The authors of these competition projects have access to gravel pits and quarries until September 2012, where they can carry out their research. After the completion of the research works, the national jury will announce three Czech winners in November 2012, who will be awarded a financial prize. In December, an international jury will convene, which will select the three best projects from all 17 countries on a global level.

The selected projects from the Czech Republic address the following topics:

  • Increasing landscape biodiversity using the exploited space and imported materials (Mokrá quarry)
  • School in the quarry (Mokrá quarry)
  • The influence of microhabitats on species biodiversity (Špička quarry)
  • Active limestone extraction and its positive impact on the biodiversity of the quarry and its surroundings (Špička quarry)
  • Cep II – sandpit for biodiversity (Suchdol sandpit)
