The city has announced a competition for the contractor of all design works for the Cultural Centre in Šumperk, from documentation for building permits to supervision concluded with occupancy. The selected design office will proceed according to the architectural study and author's supervision by Petr Hájek ARCHITEKTI, which prepared the foundational architectural study in 2021. According to the updated study in 2023, the projected investment costs are estimated at 320 to 420 million CZK excluding VAT, including changes to the building's layout, modernization of installations, stage technology, acoustic solutions, interior solutions, and mobile elevation in the main hall.

Renowned Prague architect Prof. Petr Hájek and his team envision the Cultural Centre in Šumperk as a representative pavilion surrounded by a beautiful park. Greater multifunctionality of the large hall, a new hall for club events, green roofs, and an interesting façade are planned. Petr Hájek provided a brief interview regarding the content of the reconstruction. You can read an excerpt from it in the following lines.

Many people in Šumperk associate the Cultural Centre building with the era of socialism and would prefer to see it razed to the ground. Why do you think it makes sense to reconstruct it?
After demolition or fundamental reconstruction, much valuable art and artistic craftsmanship details would be lost. The building cannot be dismissed due to its history. Seeing a deficiency in it is the same as judging a person by the time they were born. In art, there is no progress, and it exists outside of time. It makes no sense to ask whether St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle is better or worse than the Sagrada Família in Barcelona or the chapel at Ronchamp by Le Corbusier. The Cultural Centre holds values that are important to preserve for future generations, and this is something we took into account in our design.

Can you briefly describe your approach to the Cultural Centre building in Šumperk?
We preserved everything valuable from the past and added a contemporary layer of architecture. This whole was then equipped with modern theatrical technologies, contemporary facilities, and gastronomic services. The most significant intervention took place in the exterior. The building will be enveloped in a new translucent shell. This will enhance the artistic expression of the building as a solitary structure set in a beautiful park. Green roofs are intended to prevent overheating of the building itself and its surroundings.
