For owners of facade windows, triple glazing is a common component of comfortable living. However, starting this year, triple glazing is becoming the standard even among roof windows. And a good piece of news for your wallet: the solution from VELUX is affordable for everyone. The bonuses are significant! Roof windows provide a big plus for the health of the entire family. Do you know how they work?

Roof windows are a very useful ally for comfortable living. They reward you by bringing more natural light and fresh air into the attic. The age-old proverb "Where the sun doesn't shine, a doctor comes" still holds a lot of truth. The World Health Organization estimates that up to 85% of the population, particularly in developed countries, struggle with health consequences caused by staying in poorly ventilated spaces in homes suffering from the so-called Sick Building Syndrome. The Czech Republic is no exception. An unhealthy indoor environment can arise in both modern and older buildings.

Energy savings remove energy

Often, we create a life in unnecessarily dark and unbreathable environments ourselves. The incentive to reduce heat loss to an absolute minimum can also be counterproductive. The house often transforms into a "can" in its very effort to achieve the highest energy savings and excessive insulation, where air does not circulate properly, and dust, mold, and dust mites accumulate. Thus, unwelcome "tenants" responsible for asthma and dangerous allergies come to stay.

But there are more problems. Lack of natural light causes fatigue and can disrupt our biorhythm and hormone production in the body. We tend to solve the problem of poorly lit rooms with artificial lighting. However, this cannot replace the health effects of sunlight and incurs additional energy costs. "We should look at energy-efficient homes from a broader perspective; sometimes the priority isn't to save as much energy as possible. It is more prudent to think about how to ensure good health and higher quality of life," reminds Klára Bukolská, an architect at VELUX.

What happens when you don't ventilate properly

Natural ventilation represents one of the key factors for healthy and ultimately satisfied living. A sufficient supply of fresh air during the day and night fundamentally affects the mental well-being and physical condition of each of us. A study, Healthy Homes Barometer 2016, highlights the serious health consequences of staying in an enclosed space with a poor microclimate. This study was prepared by the Humboldt University of Berlin in cooperation with VELUX for 14 European countries, including the Czech Republic. Among the most serious issues are throat and nasal infections, which regularly affect nearly 70% of Czechs.

Learn and open a roof window

A roof window is a solution that sends issues with a lack of light and fresh air out of this world! Did you know, for example, that a healthy indoor environment increases children's concentration by up to 15%? This was demonstrated by a recent survey, the Healthy Homes Barometer 2016, prepared by the Humboldt University of Berlin in cooperation with VELUX. The statement that a roof window could help younger children with homework, teenagers with high school entrance exams, or university students with credits is not exaggerated at all. Regularly ventilating a room also significantly reduces the development of health-threatening mold.

Sufficient light in a room, along with fresh air, works on mental and physical health much like plugging into a power source. In this regard, facade windows cannot compete with roof windows at all. Roof windows can bring in up to twice the amount of light into the interior.

For new builds and renovations

The new VELUX roof window with triple glazing is a compelling modern response to customer desires. It will please anyone wanting to transform their attic into a healthier and more comfortable place with plenty of natural light and fresh air. It’s definitely worth considering adding an additional roof window to the existing ones - not only will you get even more natural light into the interior, but you'll also visually connect the interior with the surroundings and significantly enhance your comfort in using the room. Thanks to the triple glazing with ThermoTechnology™ insulation system, worries about losing thermal comfort inside the house by adding another window are eliminated. The right interior temperature won't be just a feeling but a reality - and you will finally enjoy your heating bill (perhaps for the first time in your life)!

Good news for attic owners! Energy-efficient yet comfortable living is now affordable for everyone. VELUX has brought to the market new, affordable triple-glazed windows. These can now be purchased at a price comparable to double glazing, without any compromise on quality. VELUX thus introduces a new standard among roof windows and responds to future trends related to reducing the energy demands of buildings.

VELUX = VE (ventilation) + LUX (light)

Every year, VELUX organizes many activities aimed at educating students of secondary and higher schools in the fields of architecture, healthy living, and environmental sustainability. Examples include the high school competition "Life Under One Roof" and the international competition for university students "Active House Award." This idea follows the legacy of its founder, Villum Kann Rasmussen, who believed that people have a certain consumption, and the surplus should be utilized in some way to give back to society. A significant part of VELUX's philosophy is also the effort to support social events and help those in need. For this purpose, the VELUX foundation operates, specifically, the VILLUM FONDEN foundation also works in the Czech Republic.
