Chomutov - Chomutov has obtained a building permit for the transformation of the former municipal baths. The costs are estimated to exceed one billion crowns. The city wants to secure funding and announce a tender for the contractor. Further steps will depend on the new city leadership after the municipal elections, Deputy Mayor Martin Bocian (New North) informed ČTK.
"It stands that we should bring it to a certain stage and then it will be up to the new city hall after the elections next year how to decide to proceed with the project," the deputy stated. He added that he does not consider it appropriate for the contract with the contractor to be signed just a few weeks before the elections, which will be in the autumn of 2026. The public procurement for the contractor is planned for next year. The new leadership will decide whether they want to continue with the plan.
The development department of the Chomutov city hall is looking for a suitable source of financing. "Without the involvement of European funds, the city will never be able to implement this on its own," Bocian said.
The plan is for the former swimming pool to be replaced by a cultural, educational, and community space after reconstruction. Its heart will be a library. The future design emerged from an architectural proposal.
In the center of the fifty-thousand-strong city, the baths have stood since the 1980s. They ceased to serve the public more than ten years ago. The leadership previously did not rule out the demolition of the building. Numerous ideas emerged on how to utilize the former baths. These included, for example, an education center, a facility for surfers with an artificial wave, a botanical garden, and more.
