Brno - The new hall for track cyclists and athletes in Brno will take the form of an oval wooden pavilion. The building is to be open towards the city, near the Lužánky swimming stadium, and will naturally connect with the park. The winning design, chosen by the expert jury of a narrower architectural competition organized by the Office of the Architect of the City of Brno (KAM), comes from the studio ov architekti. The results of the competition were approved by the council today. Construction could begin in 2027, with projected costs of 1.1 billion crowns excluding tax. This was stated today by the councilor for sports, Tomáš Aberl (TOP 09).
"The winning design is dynamic, transparent, minimizes built-up area, and is sensitively located in greenery. The all-wooden structure of the building aims to become a visually memorable mark of the stadium," said Mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS). The authors perceive Sport Street as a boundary between block development and park space with individual buildings and sports facilities. For this reason, the velodrome building has been conceived as a solitary house with a distinctive external geometry that connects the park with the urban structure.
Two years ago, the city leadership decided to demolish the dilapidated football stadium behind Lužánky and to build a new one in the location where the velodrome, currently used by the club TJ Favorit Brno, stands today. The new hall near the swimming stadium is to serve cyclists and also provide facilities for athletes. "For them, it would be the only covered sports facility in Brno. In the case of cyclists, we are striving for a national center for cycling to be established there," Vaňková said.
Aberl expects that a project for the new hall will be developed next year and construction could begin in 2027. The hall is to serve for joint training of cyclists and athletes as well as for top-level competitions. The council also discussed an agreement with the club TJ Favorit Brno today, as the city wants to acquire their properties in the Brno Exhibition Center area due to the football stadium. According to Aberl, the agreement lies in the fact that the city will obtain the club's buildings while ensuring the cyclists have facilities in the new combined hall. It is likely that the municipal company Starez-sport will operate it, and the club would benefit from a preferential rent, Aberl said. He assured that the construction of the football stadium for 20,000 to 25,000 visitors on the site of the current velodrome will only begin after the new hall near Lužánky is completed.
