Brno - The Brno City Hall will begin preparing the necessary documents for the construction of a new football stadium. Deputy Mayor Barbora Javorová (KDU-ČSL) is to ensure the preparation of a so-called technical-economic assignment. This was stated today by Mayor Roman Onderka (ČSSD) to journalists. The arena for 30,000 spectators is to be built behind the Lužánky park on the site of the remnants of the football stadium, where Brno's Zbrojovka won the league champion title in 1978.

The costs for the construction of the football stadium are estimated at 1.2 to 1.5 billion crowns. The mayor stated that the arena should be completed in 2011. Chairman of the ČSSD Jiří Paroubek today expressed that the costs for the relocation of utilities and the construction of the necessary infrastructure for the stadium should be covered by the state. Paroubek wants to discuss this with the chairman of the budget committee and the minister of finance. In the event that the Olympics were to take place in the Czech Republic, part of the football tournament would likely be held at the new Brno stadium.
Quality sports facilities are also lacking for the hockey players in Brno. According to the mayor, a multipurpose hall for hockey, basketball, and other sports should likely be built in the cadastral area of Brno-Starý Lískovec, near the new campus of Masaryk University. The construction of the hall would primarily be funded by private investors, while the infrastructure construction would be financed from the Brno budget.
The third sports facility that the Brno leadership is counting on is a modern cycling oval. The velodrome in the Brno exhibition grounds is outdated and in poor technical condition. According to the mayor, it is therefore necessary to construct a new oval, and when it is created, it should also provide space for other athletes, such as freestyle cyclists or inline skaters, alongside track cycling. "I think young people would appreciate this in Brno," Onderka stated.
The appropriate land for the construction of the cycling facility is to be identified by city hall officials. One of the options is to use vacant land in the Brno-south district near the new baseball stadium. The oval should also be utilized if the Olympic Games are held in the Czech Republic.
