Kadaň (Chomutovsko) - The completion of the revitalization of Studentské náměstí in Kadaň will be delayed due to archaeological findings. Archaeologists at the construction site discovered artifacts such as coins and ceramic molds, as well as the foundations of an artillery bastion. The construction will therefore be extended until July, said the mayor of Kadaň, Jiří Kulhánek (ODS), to ČTK today.

"Among the most significant discoveries are also the foundations of the artillery bastion, which we uncovered during construction. Based on the decision of the National Heritage Institute, this bastion was documented, restored, and then covered again under the supervision of conservationists. Above it, a replica was built that is practically indistinguishable from the original bastion, as stone that was found here was used, and the mortar was made from sand that was sourced directly from the area of the bastion," said Kulhánek. The findings relate to the history of Kadaň from the medieval period, and further archaeological research will continue. The most significant discoveries will be presented in the square after its completion on panels forming an open-air gallery.

The reconstruction of the area on the edge of the city heritage zone began in February. With costs around 25 million crowns, it is the largest investment project in Kadaň this year. The area of the former bus station is to be transformed into a relaxation zone. In addition to the open-air gallery, there will be a colored statue of Joseph II, a pétanque court, a chessboard among benches, and a fountain. The square is being created according to the design of David Šmíd, a former student of the construction industrial school located near the square.

The completion of the construction was scheduled for June, so as not to restrict the entrepreneurs who have businesses in the square. "The extension should last until about the third quarter of July. On the other hand, many interesting things from the history of Kadaň have emerged, which is positive for all of us. Hopefully, everyone will understand the reasons for the extension," said the mayor.
