Kadaň - The city council in Kadaň has announced a tender for the construction of the so-called Student Square. The new design for the former bus station area, which currently serves as a market, was created by former student of the Kadaň construction school, David Šmíd. Construction work is expected to begin in October, said the mayor Jiří Kulhánek (ODS) to ČTK.

"We would like to start construction in October and complete as much of it as possible over the winter. This is primarily due to local entrepreneurs, so they do not lose revenue because of the renovation. People were also concerned about the reduction of parking spaces. However, the longitudinal parking spaces that will be eliminated will be fully replaced by perpendicular parking, including those that drivers have illegally used so far, such as at intersections and similar places," stated Kulhánek. According to him, the project's budget will range between ten and 20 million crowns, and the city will cover it from its own resources.
The square is to be transformed into a relaxation zone with an open-air gallery. New features will include a pétanque court, a fountain, seating on the steps, and a chessboard among the benches. While the sidewalk currently bypasses the square, it will now run through the center of the area. The author of the design, David Šmíd, has also created the design for the reading room in the city library for Kadaň.
