Kadaň (Chomutov Region) - Reconstruction of the so-called Students' Square has begun in Kadaň, costing 25 million crowns. The space of the former bus station is set to be transformed into a relaxation zone with an open gallery, aiming to attract the attention of locals again. The city leadership has already chosen the design for the coloring of the statue of Joseph II, which will remind that the square belongs to the students, said Kadaň mayor Jiří Kulhánek (ODS) to ČTK.

"In the city council, we also discussed how the statue of Joseph II will be colored. We started from proposals created by artist Dan Hájek. There were five proposals in total, and we ultimately agreed on the design that the author himself recommended. It's Joseph II. with a sash, on which it is written, among other things, Graduate. I believe that the statue will fit well into the space and will express that this is a student square," Kulhánek stated.
The statue is currently in a restoration workshop and will be one of the interesting elements of the emerging square. The transformation of the area near the construction industrial school was proposed by its former student David Šmíd. In addition to Joseph II. or the open-air gallery that will be created in place of the current parking spaces, the Students' Square will feature a pétanque court, a fountain, seating on the steps, and a chessboard among the benches. While the sidewalk currently circumvents the square, it will now run through its center. "However, people will not lose parking spaces. Longitudinal parking will be replaced with transverse parking, thus replacing the unofficial parking spots that some drivers have been using so far," the mayor added.
The construction is expected to be completed by summer to avoid disrupting the season for operators in the area. The reconstruction of the square will be one of the largest investment projects for the city this year.
