Do architects have something to say even outside big cities? Are the residents of an ordinary Czech village ready to let architecture enter their immediate surroundings? Can changes in public space transform social life in the community? Can public space be improved even with minimal resources, but with a maximum dose of creative thinking?
These were the questions that gave rise to the idea of the workshop. To find answers, we needed 24 architecture students and approximately 70 wooden pallets. The students' task was to design and handcrafted objects over the course of three days that would shake up the stagnant waters of public space in the village of Srbsko. Srbsko is an average Czech village with approximately five hundred inhabitants located in the Český Kras region near Beroun. An important aspect of the workshop was to involve local residents in the creation of the projects. Therefore, we stopped them right outside their homes and asked for their opinions. At the same time, we requested their participation and the loan of tools for the workshop's needs. The creation took place in a visible location in the middle of the village so that the architects could freely meet with passersby and discuss. Thematic lectures at the beginning of the workshop (Anthropictures, Paletky, Mjolk architects, Jan Tyrpekl) and the final presentations of the projects were also open to the public. Five new installations were created in the village: a cross in the local chapel, a floating dock as a reminder of the floods, a children's climbing frame connected to a bouldering gym, swings suspended from the bridge over the Berounka River, and a community smokehouse. The projects will remain in their places for further use and will become new furniture in the village, which lacks the funds for larger investments in public space. And what about your hometown? Does it not also need a new impulse and change? It really works. Come see for yourself and experience it firsthand!
