What happens when we take down the old copper weathervane from the roof of a historic monument? We witness a mastery of craftsmanship, beauty that we rarely see so closely. This is exactly how we can meet historic monuments up close at the new exhibition dedicated to the lifelong restoration efforts of architect and educator Václav Girsa.
The famous castles Grabštejn, Frýdlant, Bezděz, or the Český Krumlov chateau are somewhat familiar to most of us. Many of us have visited them at least once. Their restoration usually occurs anonymously under the guidance of the relevant institutions, and it is generally assumed that they are well taken care of within the framework of “monument care.” Nonetheless, there are prominent individuals, specific experts whose expertise, diligence, and passion for the cause are so exceptional that it is a shame their names remain hidden behind the work. And it is Girsa's name in connection with landmarks in our Liberec Region that the wider public is invited to discover at the exhibition in the North Bohemian Museum titled Houses with Memory | The Work of Architect Václav Girsa. Visitors will have a unique opportunity to explore the process of the rebirth of historic architecture through photographs, documentary films, and unique artifacts.
Girsa’s respectful approach to monuments, his methodology, and sensitivity to historical context do not apply only to the oldest historic architecture, but also to such jewels of modern architecture as the Müller Villa in Prague. Its model, including replicas of period objects along with a documentary film about the course of the reconstruction, will also be part of the exhibition project, which simultaneously honors the occasion of the author’s eightieth birthday. However, the exhibition is not only a celebration of one prominent individual but also raises the question of how to approach valuable historic architecture and how to deal with it even in a state of decay, so that it remains alive and speaks to us authentically.
In the Liberec Region, we find significant traces of Girsa’s work on the landscape's face in the form of valuable and viable historic monuments. Who among us remembers what Grabštejn or Valdštejn looked like before their restoration? After getting acquainted with the remarkable work of the architect-conservator, we might feel the urge to revisit all those well-established buildings in the landscape and memory. Perhaps we will see them through different eyes.
A catalog accompanies the exhibition, and Girsa's successful publications are also available for sale at the North Bohemian Museum. The National Technical Museum in Prague and the National Heritage Institute – Regional Expert Workplace in Liberec are also collaborating on the exhibition's realization.
