The competition for the modifications of the center of Benešov knows the winner

Benešov - The winners of the architectural competition for the new design of Benešov's center are Marcela Steinbachová and Vít Holý from the studio Skupina. Their proposal impressed the jury the most among all 14 submitted works. Over the next two years, project work should commence, followed by the actual construction modifications, which the city hall estimates will cost between 70 and 100 million CZK. If unexpected issues arise, such as in old cellars, the final price could be even higher.

Steinbachová told reporters today that while working on the design, they drew inspiration from historical photographs, when the main square served as a gathering place for commerce and various cultural activities. They therefore aimed to create a pleasant open space while maximizing greenery in the square. No trees are to be cut down; only some will be transplanted. Benches and tables will be added, where it will be possible to play chess and board games. "We are making maximum use of smaller format granite paving stone supplemented with marble mosaic, which is in front of the houses," Steinbachová stated.

The competition for the adjustments to Masaryk Square and Malé náměstí was announced this February. A total of 14 teams from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and even Germany took part. In total, 56 architects, urban planners, engineers, and other professionals dedicated more than 21,000 hours to the project.

According to the city hall, the main square should become a natural center where people feel comfortable to walk, sit, and enjoy a coffee. According to Mayor Petr Hostka (ČSSD), the city center has needed renovation for a long time. The main issue is overly grown greenery and a lack of seating areas.

Other cities are also renovating their squares. Similar architectural competitions have previously been announced by Lysá nad Labem in the Nymburk region or Hostivice near Prague.
