Benešov - Benešov is planning modifications to Masaryk Square and Malé náměstí. In September, an architectural competition will be announced, and the public will also be involved in expressing their opinions about the future form of the city center. The result should be known next spring, Mayor Petr Hostek (ČSSD) said today to ČTK.

"We expect that there will be more studies and people will choose the winning variant," he stated.

According to him, the square should be a natural center where people will feel comfortable, can take a walk, sit down, and have a coffee. However, it is not expected that cars will be excluded from the area. The proposal for the construction of large underground garages is, according to the mayor, unrealistic from a financial standpoint. "It is not within the city's capabilities to eliminate traffic from the square," he said.

The city center has needed reconstruction for a long time, according to Hostek. The problem is overgrown greenery and a lack of seating areas. People should express their views on how much greenery, benches, or water features should be in the square or whether they desire a larger gathering space.

Other cities are also renovating their squares. A similar architectural competition was previously announced by Lysá nad Labem in the Nymburk region. The goal of the new design for Husovo náměstí in Lysá is, for example, to calm traffic and improve transit and parking, as well as enhance conditions for relaxation. The whole area should also be multifunctional and barrier-free.
