The ARCH Award is a prestigious award for architecture, granted since 1998 by the influential professional magazine ARCH on architecture and other cultures, published by Eurostav, Ltd. since 2006. The purpose of the award is to highlight remarkable works from the domestic architectural scene and contribute to its further cultivation. The ARCH Award has a high professional reputation, ensured by the participation of top European architects in the jury. Its specific feature is the rule that one cannot apply for it. Nominations for the ARCH Award are granted annually by the editorial board of the magazine, composed of prominent figures from the Slovak and Central European architectural scene.
The 2013 ARCH Award was decided by an international jury consisting of Andrea Bacová (editor-in-chief of ARCH, Slovakia), Dieter Henke (Austria), Ladislav Kuba (Czech Republic), Juraj Šujan (Slovakia), and Ľubomír Závodný (Slovakia) from September 18 to 20, 2013. From the jury's evaluation:
Andrea Bacová: Suburbanization in the suburbs is not heading in the right direction in Slovakia. There are not many high-quality concepts emerging in these locations. I would like to highlight Slnečnice as a favorable example of how it could be done, and they have the quality that meets our expectations in this segment. Even though it is standard, it is certainly a model worth following. The concept of Slnečnice also consistently works with the public space.
Dieter Henke: I consider Slnečnice to be a good project. From the perspective of an architect operating in the Austrian scene, I find the public spaces to be excellently resolved. The fact that the investor gave up on front gardens is a significant benefit because it generated public space that is valuable for all residents. This is very important in residential districts on the periphery.
Ladislav Kuba: … creating something functional with inner space – its own urbanism – on green areas where there is nothing at all is definitely a tough task. In the city, one can reference the surrounding street development. … in Slnečnice, the urbanism exists and has been newly created.
Juraj Šujan: … with apartment buildings, it is particularly important to consider what kind of common space they create, not only outdoors but also inside the building, which is within the architect's power and should be their focus. The authors dealt with this excellently. Therefore, I believe Slnečnice is one of the works that could send such a signal.
