Zdeňka Vydrová

On October 24, 2016, the Ministry of Culture Awards were announced. The significant award for contributions in the field of architecture was awarded to the long-time city architect of Litomyšl, Zdeňka Vydrová. She was nominated for the award by the Czech Chamber of Architects (ČKA). The Chamber particularly highlighted the important expert work of architect Zdeňka Vydrová, which has significantly influenced the quality of the built environment in Litomyšl. This small town in East Bohemia has rightfully been considered a Mecca of contemporary architecture since the 1990s. The Czech Chamber of Architects is especially pleased with this award as it has long advocated for the position of city architect.

The development of our built environment plays a key role in well-structured cooperation between experts in architecture and urbanism and representatives of government and self-government. There are only a few Czech cities that can boast such exemplary application of this collaboration as Litomyšl. This town of ten thousand in East Bohemia is still considered an unattainable model for other Czech cities. Of course, it holds true here that where there is no political will, there is no help. However, the city representatives found a great partner in implementing their visions - for nearly a quarter of a century, Zdeňka Vydrová has served as the city architect here, and she has undeniable merits in the development of the city.

The Czech Chamber of Architects sees the role of the city architect as a guarantor of the quality appearance of our towns and municipalities. A person who is open to dialogue and has a desire to lend her expertise to the public, which under her guidance gains a positive relationship with architecture. Zdeňka Vydrová is undoubtedly such a figure. In this small East Bohemian town, she has incredibly activated interest in quality architecture. With her involvement, a number of architectural competitions have taken place here, which the Czech Chamber of Architects considers the most effective way of commissioning public contracts, both in terms of the transparency of the entire process (and thus public involvement) and the quality of architecture.

Zdeňka Vydrová demonstrates that any task faced by a city architect has elegant and clean solutions. Particularly her sensitive and timeless approach to the historical environment of the city is absolutely admirable. Litomyšl is known for its extremely high-quality historical buildings, which can often present a heavy burden for contemporary architects. However, Zdeňka Vydrová has embraced this role with honor and transformed a city that builds on historical foundations not into an empty museum, but has managed to open it to modern architecture. The fusion of the old and the new has succeeded splendidly under her leadership. After all, this is a theme that is completely essential for this architect even in her own work. In 2015, her Gallery Pakosta in Litomyšl was nominated for the Award of the Club for Old Prague as the best architecture in a historical environment.
