Česká Lípa – Škroupovo náměstí in the center of Česká Lípa is set to become a quiet zone, while also serving as a space for smaller cultural events. The city has announced an architectural competition for its future transformation, receiving 14 proposals. The winner was the Brno studio M2AU. A significant advantage of this proposal is the well-utilized, sufficiently large multipurpose space in the flat part of the square. This was reported today by the city hall spokesperson Kristýna Kňákal Brožová.
"The jury also appreciated the quality artistic representation of the historical footprint of the church, the belfry, and the dean's house. For further processing, the jury recommended adding a more prominent water element and additional furniture including benches with backs to the proposal," said the spokesperson. The city aims to start the square's reconstruction in two years. All the designs from the architectural competition can be viewed by the public from today until the end of June at an exhibition in the foyer of the Crystal Cultural House.
Škroupovo náměstí is located in the very heart of Česká Lípa. "This is an archaeologically incredibly valuable site, and it was important for us that something architecturally interesting is created here in the future, while also respecting this special place and the surrounding buildings in the city heritage conservation area," said the mayor of Česká Lípa, Jitka Volfová (ANO). In the past, there was also a church in the square, which was lost in two major fires that affected the city at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.
In the architectural competition, the city included the area of Škroupovo náměstí, the adjacent streets of Prokopa Holého, and the historic stairs connecting the square with Jindřicha z Lipé Street. "After the reconstruction, Škroupovo náměstí should be a quiet zone with plenty of greenery, shade, benches, but also with a sufficiently large space for hosting smaller cultural events and markets of various kinds," said the city hall spokesperson. According to her, there will be a significant reduction in parking spaces, which should only be on the side of Prokopa Holého Street.
The winning proposal most closely met the criteria set and the vision of the city hall. "Although the architectural competition is a lengthy and costly affair, I am glad that we organized it," added the mayor. The city hall financially awarded four architectural proposals, distributing 750,000 crowns among their authors.
