Děčín - Děčín has announced an architectural competition for a footbridge that will connect the banks of the Elbe along the railway bridge. According to the proposal, the project aims to allow pedestrians and cyclists to safely cross above the river. The total costs of the project are estimated at 40 million crowns. This was stated by the spokesperson of the Děčín city hall, Markéta Lakomá.

Architects can submit their designs by July 18. The footbridge will run alongside the railway bridge, which is one of the significant structures in Děčín. "We hope that the competition will bring a quality solution for the space that will not visually disrupt one of the city’s landmarks," said Mayor Marie Blažková (ANO).

The railway bridge was recently renovated, and during the reconstruction, the footbridge was considered, with the builders placing footings for the structure, but the city did not find the necessary funds for the investment at that time.

The footbridge is expected to significantly improve the connection between both banks of the city and facilitate access for residents of Podmokly to the Elbe Trail. "There should also be a revitalization of the waterfront," noted Blažková.

The number of cyclists passing through Děčín is growing each year. Cyclists from Australia, Korea, New Zealand, and other countries have already stopped at the local information center. One can ride along the bike path along the Elbe, head to the Ore Mountains, or follow the Ploučnice River towards Benešov nad Ploučnicí.
