The existing area around the Chapel of St. Wenceslas in Prague-Suchdol has found its possible form in the results of an architectural competition. The goal was to find a suitable solution for the public space with a new cemetery. Eleven studios participated in the competition; the winning proposal came from architects Václav Šuba and Jakub Červenka from the studio Objektor in collaboration with architect Martin Rosa.
Author's annotation of the proposal We utilize the qualities of the existing character of the place; the crowns of mature trees, the horizon of the field, the cemetery wall of the chapel, and the path leading to the tranquil view from Kozí hřbety. We define an area that expresses life and death in its entirety. The dominant element and the only contemplative architecture of the area remains the Chapel of St. Wenceslas. Horizontal orientation, destigmatization of the cemetery site, working with a transparent cemetery wall, and views into the landscape are fundamental themes of the proposal.
From the jury's evaluation “The proposal sensitively responds to the landscape situation and broader urban ties, accentuating and valuing them in a moderate way. The historical chapel becomes a symbolic focal point, without this role being emphasized by undue monumentalization or other inappropriate interventions. The cemetery is located on the southern side of the path, and its composition reacts to both its course and the ubiquitous views, which are one of the most impressive qualities of the selected location. The proposal also includes an architectural concept for the gravestones of each burial site, which ensures the gradual creation of a harmonious whole, as indicated by the proposed concept of the gradual expansion of the cemetery.”
