The traditional competition of studio works by students of the Faculty of Architecture took place this time on an early date – on Thursday, January 10, 2013. Students and teachers had little time after the Christmas holidays and New Year festivities to mobilize their architectural skills to showcase their best in their semester projects. Nevertheless, it was demonstrated that the FA VUT in Brno is full of talented and promising young architects.
A jury of very interesting composition of experts in the field of architecture and urbanism was invited for the overall evaluation of student projects. The evaluation of the works began in the morning. Shortly before that, a chairperson was elected for the jury, specifically a chairwoman. This role was taken on by Ing. arch. Markéta Cajthamlová – a well-known architect with numerous realizations and teaching experience. Alongside her, the projects were evaluated by practicing architects and educators: doc. Ing.arch. Zdeněk Jiran and the Brno phenomenon Ing.arch. Petr Hurník. In addition to these three personalities, the works were also assessed by laureates of the previous round of the competition – Bc. Lenka Holcnerová, Miroslava Šešulková, and Daniel Struhařík. This six-member jury had a difficult task during the day – to select three winners from nearly four hundred projects. Despite the time and psychological demands, everything was accomplished, and the awarded projects could be announced during the ceremonial evening on the same day. The ceremony took place in the halls of the rectorate of VUT on Antonínská in Brno, in an atmosphere reminiscent of the First Republic era. Everything began after 6 PM, when there were enough visitors in the hall, and musicians from Gustav Brom's orchestra along with period-dressed hosts were ready to start. Suddenly, the lights in the entire atrium went out. From the darkness emerged colorful glowing balls rhythmically floating through the air in the hands of a juggler. Gradually, the lights began to illuminate, and the hall's space re-emerged from the darkness. After the first applause from the audience, the hosting duo took the floor and introduced the jury members. This was followed by a speech from the dean of the Faculty of Architecture, doc. Ing. Josef Chybík, and a speech from the chairwoman of the jury, Ms. Ing. arch. Markéta Cajthamlová. The announcement of the awards began with the granting of honorary mentions from the jury to two analytical projects that impressed the jury with their elaboration. Subsequently, the awarded works were announced. The project that impressed the jury the most was the design of the UN Pavilion in Geneva by Bc. Adam Zezula, who received a special award for poetry. The winners of the IV. Bohuslav Fuchs Prize were Bc. á with the project "Bivak in the saddle," Bc. Chmel Zdeněk with the design "Art in České Budějovice," and Bc. Kolář Pavel with the project "Relaxed Factory Areas." The three winners received tangible prizes from sponsors – HP electronics from Legia, a one-year subscription to the magazine ERA 21, and most importantly, the material embodiment of the prize – a sculpture with the artistically rendered name FUCHS. The authors of the awarded projects were also not left empty-handed. They were given publications and tangible prizes from Archiweb. The evening continued in a relaxed atmosphere with first-republic music and period delicacies.
