On Wednesday, May 28, 2014, the Faculty of Architecture in Brno once again welcomed the competition for studio semester works under the name Bohuslav Fuchs Award. Three renowned personalities from the ranks of practicing architects took on the traditional evaluation of student projects to select the best works.
This time, architect Marek Štěpán, working in Brno, made his way to the Faculty of Architecture. This figure gained fame for his contribution to contemporary sacred architecture, but also for the popular Freedomky. Thanks to his experience from previous work at the Brno school, he has the best qualifications to assess student works. Similarly, there was the equally experienced Radek Suchánek. This juror works at the School of Architecture in Liberec and has good practice in teaching young architects. Completing the trio is architect Martina Buřičová from the Caraa group, who arrived in Brno from her studio in Prague.
This year, laureates from the previous year’s competition once again actively participated as students. Luděk Šimoník, Martin Kůs, and Bc. Petr Štukheil contributed to the joint evaluation of their classmates' works, forming a six-member committee.
After a morning meeting of all jurors at the Faculty of Architecture, the evaluation of the works exhibited in individual studios could begin. However, a chairperson for the jury was first chosen, whose vote would decisively resolve any disagreements. Ms. architect Martina Buřičová was elected as chairperson. The all-day evaluation and selection of the highest quality works transitioned into a debate about the ten finalists in the afternoon. The highlight was the discussion about the three winning works. At five o'clock in the afternoon, the jury's verdict was finally announced, and everything could move towards the announcement of the awardees.
This year's Bohuslav Fuchs Award focused on the trials and paradoxes of student life as its main theme. Similarly, both the motivational campaign and the ceremonial evening were conceived. The announcement took place from 6 p.m. in the modified areas of the artistic workshop, where the long-awaited names of the winners were revealed in front of a full audience of students and teachers.
The first three works earned their authors not only unique statuettes but also a number of tangible prizes from sponsors. Miss Tereza Dvořáková took home one of the statuettes for her project House for a Lifetime. The design was created under the supervision of Ing. arch. Jan Mléčka. Her colleague Bc. Jan Havlíček also earned the title "winning work" with his project Community Center in Lesná. His project supervisor was Ing. arch. Vítězslav Nový. Closing the trio of the best was the project Winery Dolní Kounice by Bc. Radek Pasterný from the studio of prof. Ing. arch. Ivan Koleček.
An additional seven projects were awarded the title of "recognized work." This year saw the introduction of an award for "best studio." After extensive discussions, the jury selected the studio at Institute UN2 with the assignment Res Publica IV. The quality of the students' works here was supported by architects David Mikulášek, Pavel Jura, Vítězslav Nový, and Jan Sochor. They also received great congratulations and a significant sponsorship gift from the company Legia.
Following the moderator's closing remarks, there was free entertainment and discussion about the projects, accompanied by music and tastings of delicacies prepared by talented female students from the Faculty of Architecture.
