Jablonec nad Nisou - Changing rooms and better facilities with toilets and showers should be offered to visitors at the Mšeno dam in Jablonec nad Nisou as early as next year. The dam, covering nearly 35 hectares, is one of the largest urban reservoirs in Europe. Jablonec has announced an architectural competition for the design of the facilities, with results expected in mid-October. The city estimates the costs for the modifications at 8.5 million crowns, said city hall spokesperson Jana Fričová today.
The dam is a popular swimming spot not only for the residents of Jablonec but also attracts people from the surrounding area. On hot days, up to 5,000 people head there daily. However, it lacks facilities for year-round operation. "That was the main reason for announcing the architectural competition titled Facilities and Surroundings of the Jablonec Reservoir, the terms of which were specified by the city architect based on public demands," said Petr Roubíček (ODS), the deputy mayor for city development.
According to Roubíček, the project should address the area U Prutu on the western side of the dam and the cove near the pool on the eastern side. "These two locations are the most visited, and they are in the greatest need of decent toilets with sufficient capacity," the deputy mayor said. He also noted that the condition and appearance of the food stalls should be improved, as they currently vary greatly, and some are quite outdated.
"If everything goes as planned, and the evaluation committee selects the winning design in mid-October, then project preparation will take place in the winter months, and implementation will happen next year, as soon as weather conditions permit. Visitors can then look forward to a more unified appearance, greater toilet capacity, and lightweight changing areas in the next summer season," Roubíček added.
