Jablonec nad Nisou - There is not much left of the burned-down Sun Spa by the dam in Jablonec nad Nisou. The remediation of the area was completed on Monday, costing the city around one million crowns, said Jana Fričová, spokesperson for the city council. The cleared land has already been handed over to the tenant, whose contract does not expire until the end of October. A benefit rock concert for the Sun Spa will take place there on Friday, featuring the bands Danger Six, Diesel, and Muhu.

"A month after the devastating fire, we would like to meet with everyone and forget for a moment about the misfortune that befell us," Lucie Pokorná, who operated the complex for many years, told ČTK today. According to her, nothing remains of the complex, only a water connection sticking out of the bare ground to provide sanitary facilities; two mobile toilets have been rented. What will happen next is still unknown, and the city hall is in a similar situation. The fate of the burned-down municipal complex of the Sun Spa will be decided by the new city leadership, which will emerge from the elections next week.

The Sun Spa, established in 1927, offered refreshments and a sun meadow enclosed with a fence, divided into women's and men's sections. A large portion of the complex was destroyed by a fire on the morning of Wednesday, August 17, with the city estimating the damage at ten million crowns. Criminal investigators are looking into the cause of the fire. They are examining three possibilities - intentional arson, negligence, and a technical malfunction of the equipment.

The nearly one-hundred-year-old buildings of the Sun Spa were already in poor condition before the fire, and discussions had been held in the city for many years about whether to reconstruct the historic buildings or demolish them and build a modern structure in their place. A few years ago, the city had a project for a minimalist building developed, which was supposed to replace the dilapidated Sun Spa complex. The light wooden structure with translucent walls was intended to offer relaxation and privacy in the shade of a garden atrium, as well as a broader view of the dam from the upper terrace. However, the project by Petr Stolín faced opposition from part of the public, which is one of the reasons it was not realized.

Now, according to Fričová, several options are on the table for what to build on the vacant land. "It will either be a replica of what stood there, or something new in the style of the Atelier 4 project, which has a valid zoning decision, or there will be something completely different, for which an architectural competition will be announced. The decision will be up to the new council," the spokesperson of the city council added.
