Kolín – The first prize in the architectural competition for a new municipal library and community center at Jiráskově náměstí in Kolín was awarded to the design by Adam Rujbr Architects. The judges of the architectural competition, which the city announced in June, selected from 46 proposals. Kolín's city architect David Mateásko informed about this today on his Facebook.
"The jury appreciates the overall concept of the design, which urbanistically complements and closes the square with a new building of adequate size, height, and scale. The building brings positive and vibrant energy to the public structure and features scenographically well-thought-out divisions and a gradation of interior spaces. The overall effect of the transparent, lightweight building draped in a subtle, undulating veil is pleasant and necessary for the given location," stated the jury in the evaluation of the winning design of the three-story building.
Mateásko told ČTK that the number of proposals, which also included submissions from Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, and Spain, is not standard. "We consider it a great honor that so many proposals were submitted; three-quarters were absolutely professional, and the jury convened for two days," said Mateásko.
The second prize went to the design by Marek Chalupa Architects, the third prize to the design by Refuel, and a special award was given to the design of the Bratislava studio SLLA. The city is preparing an exhibition of all competition proposals.
The Kolín municipal library has been located at Husova street in the building of the former Czech Savings Bank since 1948. In addition to increasing capacity for the book collection, the modern new building is expected to offer, for example, a community space, a café, and relaxation zones. According to the original plan, it was supposed to be built in the area of the Kolín Castle on the site of a gap left by the so-called barley attics. However, at the beginning of the year, the city withdrew from the original plan. The reason was the demand from heritage protectors, according to which the new building should not exceed the height of two floors, which the city does not find sufficient.
"In 2025, we will be working on finalizing the competition proposal into the form of a construction proposal / architectural study and other steps that will gradually lead the idea of the library towards realization," stated Mateásko. The estimated cost of building the new library is projected at 240 million crowns excluding VAT, according to the competition requirements. The preparation, discussion, and construction period is estimated to take five to seven years, according to earlier city information.
