The Brno architectural studio AOSI won the competition to revitalize the cultural center Osvětová beseda in the Slovakian village of Ivanka pri Dunaji.
The cultural center in the village of Ivanka pri Dunaji, near Bratislava, will take on a new form. The young studio AOSI proposed a design that won in an open architectural competition. The project works with the original silhouette of Osvětová beseda and adds a new mass. The proposed extension will create an intimate inner courtyard space that seamlessly connects to the hall. At the same time, the extension re-evaluates the layout of the facilities and allows for various functions of the building even when the main social hall is not in use.
Existing Structures and Their Changes The architects retain the main essence of the existing structure of the complex – the social hall. They propose to cleanse it of the layers accumulated over time to restore its original form. The current floor will be replaced with wooden floorboards, and the existing ceiling will be changed to an acoustic ceiling, which will increase the clear height of the space. This way, the hall will have a more dignified appearance. The social hall will be shaded from the south by outdoor awnings, similar to the newly added part. Additionally, the architects will place dressing rooms and facilities for performers beneath the stage. Two staircases will be created – one for visitors and the other for performers. "In terms of urban planning, the design will suitably complement the street line. The winning team correctly identified the qualities of the existing building, which they purified from additional, less quality layers, and confidently works with the banality of its expression that defines the identity of the corner of St. Rozálie's Square," the jury evaluates the winning design.
Added Mass The revitalization of Osvětová beseda consists of a simple extension in the courtyard part of the complex, which allows for a smooth transition between the hall and the courtyard. It also creates a boundary between the inner courtyard and the square. The new mass will serve as a backup for catering, dressing rooms, office spaces for employees, or social facilities. This will provide the possibility of direct service to the interior as well as the courtyard. "Minimizing construction costs leads to a frugal spatial operational layout. The placement of the catering kitchen allows for direct service to both the interior and the courtyard. Various scenarios for the use of the building are considered during times when the hall is not in use, which should improve the operational economy of Osvětová beseda," explains the chief architect of the proposal, Ivo Stejskal. The material solution of the extension is modest and uniform. The proposed material is exposed concrete, which is accentuated by a red-colored bar in the interior.
Recurrent Motif The distinctive geometric motif of the broken line permeates the entire design. It derives from forms that enhance the environment in terms of acoustics. The motif has thus been transferred to the acoustic ceiling in the main multifunctional hall. It is repeated in the ceiling above the bar and in the form of a metal roof over the extension, as well as in a lightweight movable textile roof that can shade the entire courtyard as needed.
