Prague - Participants in this year's international talent competition Young Architect Award 2014 face a challenging task, which is to revive unused manufacturing facilities and technical areas. Interested students and young architects who have not exceeded the age of 33 can submit their works on the theme "Pain Points of Cities and Towns – Abandoned Industrial Sites" starting from February 20, 2014. Contestants should not only process the project itself but also appropriately identify and seek out problematic sites from among abandoned areas of factories, warehouses, ports, or train stations. The projects could help initiate a discussion about future construction among city residents and representatives. The patron of the competition has become the world-renowned Czech artist, architect, and designer Bořek Šípek.
Contestants from among students or graduates of architecture, urbanism, landscape and garden architecture, as well as self-taught practitioners in the field can submit their projects in the category Conceptual Studies. They have the option to choose locations identified by representatives of the affected cities and municipalities, along with the territorial professional offices of the National Heritage Institute. These include objects or areas of railway stations, military, transport, agricultural, mining shafts, but also environments where the "structure of development" has been slowly "degraded," such as the former power plant and heating plant in Holešovice and the Žižkov railway station building in Prague, the Brno Reservoir, or the location of the bus station in Liberec. However, participants can also choose their own place that they consider problematic and that meets the contest criteria.

The expert jury will be led by Tomáš Šenberger
“In the Czech lands, we usually look at abandoned industrial areas with hesitation, without the idea and will to utilize the preserved industrial traces that identify the place and context. In this regard, the competition exhibition will also be positive,” states the chairman of the jury, Tomáš Šenberger from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, CTU in Prague. The evaluation will also include Naďa Goryczková, the General Director of the National Heritage Institute, Jiří Janďourek from FUA TU in Liberec, ATAK architects, and Hana Ryšavá. Additionally, from the “Nadání Josefa, Marie a Zdeňky Hlávkových” Foundation, Josef Pechar and Benjamin Fragner from the VCPD FA CTU in Prague.

Young talents are also supported by Bořek Šípek, the patron of the contest
The patronage of this year's competition has been accepted by the leading Czech and world architect Bořek Šípek. “Nowadays, young people have problems getting involved in practice. It is difficult to get a specific contract on which they could demonstrate their skills, while they also need to build a name for their career. The competition opens up both of these possibilities. That is why I support it.”
