Competition Theme: Urban Transit Areas
The idea of the "Bullhorn – Cembrit Design Competition" aims to attract the attention of the architectural community to environments that we need and use daily, but which do not receive much attention in the architectural world or competitions. Therefore, this year's competition theme focuses on transit areas. We believe that this theme will present a strong challenge for the professional architectural community as well as the general public.

Trend: People in cities are spending more and more time in transit areas, which are becoming an important element of the urban environment. However, these often unremarkable and standardized areas tend to be inhospitable and suffer from a lack of vitality.

Our Goal: To develop conceptual designs with innovative use of fiber cement to transform Malmi Station - one of the largest suburban transit areas in Helsinki into an extraordinary and vibrant place that will enhance the quality of life for many daily users.

Transit Place Malmi Station
The assignment for the competition is to develop a conceptual design for Malmi Station in Helsinki. The Malmi station area is a very busy area in the suburbs of Helsinki with a number of architectural challenges and issues. This assignment was selected in collaboration with the Helsinki City Planning Board.

The awarded works will be exhibited during World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 and subsequently during the European traveling exhibition. The winners will also receive international recognition from Cembrit and partner networks. Winners will also be invited to a ceremonial announcement of winners with free access to the entire program associated with WDC 2012.

The Bullhorn
"The Bullhorn - Cembrit Design Competition" is an international competition for architects and designers. The awards will primarily go to conceptual designs using fiber cement that create extraordinary environments for everyday life. Awarded works will be developed into prototypes in close cooperation with Cembrit and partners.

Create the building material of the future
Ideally, building materials should not hinder the architect in creating their visions and ideas. On the contrary, they should inspire and allow absolute freedom in their work.
