Prague – The design of the planned primary school (ZŠ) in Komořany in Prague 12 will be based on the proposal by the XTOPIX architects studio. The studio won the architectural competition announced by the city hall in mid-June. Today, the spokesperson for the twelfth district, Eva Burianová, informed ČTK of this. The new school is to be built on Do Koutů street and is expected to accommodate about 810 students. According to the mayor of Prague 12, Jan Adamec (Pirates), the school could open in 2026. The city district has previously estimated the costs for the primary school construction at 450 million crowns excluding VAT.
"The new school in Komořany will be one of the largest investments in educational infrastructure,“ said the councilor for education in Prague 12, Petr Prchal (TOP 09). According to the deputy mayor of Prague 12, Jiří Fremr (ODS), it can be expected that the construction of the first primary school in Komořany will be more expensive than the recently completed construction of the city hall building on Generála Šišky street. The construction of the building, which has been housing all the departments of the Prague 12 office since summer, reportedly cost 617.8 million crowns.
Architects Pavel Buryška, Barbora Buryšková, Martin Málek, Michal Štěpař, and Lucie Lorencová from XTOPIX architects designed the school building with 27 standard classrooms, a school kitchen and dining hall, and two gymnasiums. The outdoor sports facilities, which were part of the competition brief, were placed on the roof of the building. It is walkable and planted with vegetation. Participants in the competition were also tasked with addressing transportation services and connections to technical infrastructure networks, as well as designing the school's outdoor spaces. Thanks to the placement of the sports facilities on the roof of the building, those outdoor spaces remain green in the winning project. A separate building for the caretaker is also proposed on the school grounds.
The jury, which included architects Markéta Smrčková, Miloš Kopřiva, Jan Hájek, and Tomáš Bezpalec, along with representatives from the city hall, selected the winner of the single-round architectural competition from ten projects. According to the city hall spokesperson, the committee assessed the proposals in terms of functionality, energy efficiency, and similar criteria. The winning project impressed the jury with its connection of the city and nature and how it dealt with the relatively small sloping plot of land where the building is planned.
The intention to build the primary school in Komořany was approved by the councilors in July 2019. The subsequent feasibility study conducted by Martin Burýšek confirmed in September 2020 that the school could be built on Do Koutů street. The decision that the future form of the school would arise from the architectural competition was approved by the council this February. Prague 12 announced the competition on June 14, and studios could submit their designs until mid-November. The need to increase the number of places for students is supported by demographic studies, according to councilor Prchal, responding to the potential large residential development in Komořany.
The city district also intends to build a new kindergarten. The four-class kindergarten named Mydlinky is planned to be located on land between K Beránku, Dolnocholupická, and Lešetínská streets and should provide facilities for 112 children. The start of construction was planned for this summer, but the project is now being modified to make the construction cheaper. Prague 12 decided to make adjustments based on the conclusions of the tender for the contractor of the kindergarten. The bids from participating companies significantly exceeded the estimated value of the contract.
In Prague 12, the governing coalition consists of representatives of the Pirates, ODS, TOP 09, and the Greens. Prague 12, where 56,617 residents live, encompasses the entire cadastral areas of Cholupice, Kamýk, Komořany, Modřany, and Točná.
