On Tuesday, November 16, 2010, at the Mlýnská café in Prague on Kampa, a ceremonial public announcement of the Klubu Za starou Prahu Prize for new construction in a historical environment for the year 2010 will take place at 7:00 PM. The candidates for this award, whose main aim is to draw attention to buildings that have entered the historical context in an inventive and sensitive manner, are this year the following buildings (ordered alphabetically by location, with a description of the building provided by the chairman of the award jury, Prof. Rostislav Švácha):

Multi-purpose building in Brno, Kozí Street, by architect Markéta Veselá
The author of the building found a good balance between the stability of the classical order and the degree of its questioning. Although the building only turns toward the street as a flat surface, the author succeeded in creating a play of three-dimensional volumes in its upper parts.

Residential building in Brno, Pellicova Street, by architect František Šmédka
The building features a bold, yet well-balanced asymmetric composition, stemming from the traditions of interwar modern architecture. Its style and shape resonate well with the surrounding buildings from the period of functionalism as well as from the 19th century.

Residential building Ostravská brána in Ostrava by architects Ladislav Kuba and Tomáš Pilar
The building completes the space of Kostelní náměstí around the oldest Ostrava church of St. Wenceslas. Its construction initiated the process of restoring the solid urban structure that had been severely damaged in this location at the edge of Ostrava's historical core due to demolitions and clearances.

Church of the Holy Spirit in Šumná by architect Marek Štěpán
The design of the church architecture is based on a noble symbiosis of modernity and traditionalism. Through the thoughtful placement of the new construction, the author elevated the randomly created space into a true public space.

Cultural center Střelnice in Turnov by architects Libor Čížek, Ondřej Moravec, Michal Nekola, and Radek Šíma
Using means of both modern and classical architecture, the authors created a dignified gateway to the old city center and complemented its cultural facilities. The image of the city from the south, culminating in the Neo-Gothic church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, received a cultivated base thanks to the new cultural center.

Multi-purpose palace Zdar in Ústí nad Labem by architects Jan Jehlík and Ivan Reimann
The construction of the palace significantly contributed to the rehabilitation of the severely disrupted space of the main square in Ústí. Although it differs in style and form, it found a balanced relationship with the neighboring building of the savings bank by interwar Ústí architect Franz Josef Arnold.

Multi-purpose building DM in Vyškov by architect Pavel Ripel
Through a richly articulated tower-like motif, the building expressed its corner location in the historical square. The author judiciously chose the size of the new building, thereby contributing through modern architecture to the restoration of the facade of the old street leading to the dean's church.

Everyone is warmly invited to the award announcement!
