Revitalization of the historic center of the city of Písek - results of the competition
Single-phase public project urban-planning and artistic competition
The subject of the competition was the processing of a competitive proposal for the urban and artistic solution for the revitalization of the historical city center of Písek (urban areas of Velké náměstí, Alšovo náměstí, and the adjacent street parterre), including the functional use of the area, spatial and architectural-urban solutions of the composition of the solved area - (excluding the adjacent buildings), greenery, transport relations - including the solution of traffic servicing and parking in connection with overall urban transport, respecting the given construction program.

Jury Evaluation: The proposal includes a quality transport solution, including sufficient capacity for parking areas. Beneficial for the addressed area are the transverse communication connecting elements that allow pedestrians to use the entire width of Velké náměstí, which is suitably complemented by a water element. The traffic solution highlights the eastern pedestrian part of Velké náměstí. On its northern side, it is necessary to detail the traffic turning element. The proposal sensitively designs the composition of public greenery by means of avenues and independent rhythmic groups of trees that allow the adjacent architectural values of the historical buildings to stand out. The proposal cohesively connects and unifies the area of both squares - Alšovo and Velké. The jury appreciated the cultured graphical processing of the proposal.

Jury Evaluation: The jury appreciated the simplicity and restraint of the solution in the proposal. Overall, the proposal appears balanced, but the large pedestrian area on Velké náměstí is not further enhanced by a more detailed parterre design, including furniture, which would improve the recreational value and attractiveness of this part of the square. From the perspective of the transport concept of the proposal, the design of diagonal parking was positively assessed, increasing pedestrian and recreational areas. On Alšovo náměstí, the jury appreciated the interesting concept of placing a moderate calming greenery element in a rectangular grid. The interesting seating design in the Masné krámy alley is regarded by the jury as unsuitable and also unrealistic.

Jury Evaluation: In this proposal, the jury marked the positive traffic calming element in Alšovo náměstí, in the area of the intersection of Chelčického and Jungmannova streets. Conversely, the design of longitudinal parking was assessed as disadvantageous and unsuitable. The overall number of proposed parking spaces is reduced to 60% compared to the current state, which the jury positively rated. On the northern side of Velké náměstí, an interesting element in the parterre is the proposal of a timeline.

Jury Evaluation: The authors of the proposal address the space of Velké náměstí by inserting a new central row of trees, separating the pedestrian parterre from vehicle parking. The jury does not consider this division of public space to be spatially ideal, but appreciates the form and location of the fountain in the lower part of the square. The number of proposed parking spaces is insufficient. The arrangement of parking spaces was assessed by the jury as somewhat unbalanced and inadequate to meet the needs of the distribution of civic amenities. The overall graphical expression of this proposal is at a good level.
