Revitalization of MPR Žilina, reconstruction of Mariánske námestie and adjacent streets

The historic center of Žilina is a unique, characteristic, and recognizable urban structure. Mariánske námestie, as the central space of the Urban Heritage Reserve of Žilina, is the most valuable historical space of the urban settlement. Its characteristic square layout, highlighted by the architecture of the town houses with "arcades," is part of the city's identity.

Goals and Vision
The city's goal is to find solutions for a comprehensive revitalization of the historic center through a design competition, focusing on addressing the urban interior of Mariánske námestie and selected adjoining streets as a blueprint for the gradual overall renewal of the historic core. The resulting proposal should offer a fusion of history and the present, quality, attractive representative solutions for historical public spaces, emphasizing the fulfillment of all functions of the regional center – representative, social, cultural, residential, as well as a natural center for the city and the region, but also basic service (transport, pedestrian movement) for residents living directly in the heritage reserve, as well as business people and companies operating in the center.

The aim of this urban planning-architectural design competition is to select the processor:

• urban planning-architectural study for the revitalization of the heritage reserve area
• project documentation for the territorial decision and building permit
solution for the reconstruction of Mariánske námestie and selected adjacent
communications according to the proposal.

Announcement of the competition: March 11, 2024
Deadline for submitting competition proposals: June 28, 2024, by 16:00.
Expected deadline for evaluating the competition: July 31, 2024
Expected date of announcement and publication of results: July 31, 2024

Prizes and Awards:
1st place – prize 21,250.00 €
2nd place – prize 17,000.00 €
3rd place – prize 12,750.00 €

Based on the jury's evaluation and the quality of the competition proposals, the jury may decide to award prizes totaling 4,000.00 €.
