PUBLIC ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION FOR THE RENOVATION OF JIRÁSKO SQUARE AND THE MONASTIC GARDEN IN Pilsen

Prague, Pilsen – The Karel Komárek Foundation for Transformation, in collaboration with Pilsen, announces a public two-round architectural-urban competition, the Karel Komárek Foundation Award 2016. The subject is the design for the complete revitalization of Jirásko Square, which is the historical center of the Pilsen districts of Petrohrad and Slovany. Architects will focus not only on the square itself but also on the newly accessible monastic garden and the sports complex of TJ Sokol. The key part of the selected design will be progressively implemented thanks to foundation support. The results of the architectural competition will be known in the fall.

“I expect that Jirásko Square will become, after years, a place that people will enjoy visiting,” summarizes the main goal of the project, Jan Fluxa, the deputy mayor of the Pilsen district of Slovany. The foundation's director, Jitka Přerovská, adds: “I believe that the square will transform into a vibrant hub of civic community, where it will be pleasant to be regardless of age, whether you are a schoolchild, a teenager, a parishioner, a local resident, or a random visitor.”
The goal of the architectural competition Karel Komárek Foundation Award 2016 is to find the best functional and aesthetic solution for Jirásko Square, extending into adjacent spaces, while maximizing the social potential of the area.

The competition is announced as a public, two-round.
The deadline for submitting competition proposals in the first round is June 6.
The first round is anonymous, and participation in the second round is linked to the presentation of individual proposals before a jury composed of independent experts, representatives of the city, and the foundation. Final results will be announced this fall when the entire competition will culminate in a public exhibition of all proposals.

The competition is part of an extensive project based on the collaboration of the Pilsen 2 – Slovany City District, the Pěstuj prostor association, the Dominican Monastery in Pilsen, Masaryk Elementary School in Pilsen, TJ Sokol Pilsen V., the Department of Concept and Development of the City of Pilsen, and the Karel Komárek Foundation. The competition brief for architects, which emerged from this exceptionally broad collaboration, incorporates the results of participatory planning with the local public, carried out in previous years.
The intent of the overall transformation of Jirásko Square is to emphasize the valuable urban character and historical atmosphere of the place, restore ordinary life to the area, and also support the activities and greater connectivity of active groups within the local community. Part of the project is also the accessibility of the monastic garden initiated by students from the elementary school located at the square. It was their suggestion four years ago that launched the entire project.

Jitka Přerovská also mentions the innovative potential of the project: “We expect that the competition will be an opportunity for architects to apply new economical approaches and environmentally friendly technologies in their designs. The overall solution should be sustainable in the long term, considering not only the financial aspects of maintenance but also current environmental issues.” A well-developed approach to rainwater management or the creation of conditions for an educational program in the monastic garden focused on soil, food, or water is welcomed.

The organization of the architectural competition, including the funds allocated for prizes and rewards totaling 385,000 CZK, is part of the foundation's support provided to the city, which also includes expert consulting support throughout the project. The maximum grant amount, which will cover part of the total costs associated with the project, is 25 million CZK. The project for the renovation of Jirásko Square and the monastic garden is also co-financed by the statutory city of Pilsen and the Pilsen 2 – Slovany municipal district. Completion of the transformation is expected in 2022.
The project won last year in a grant call of the Parks program, through which the Karel Komárek Foundation has been helping with the development of public greenery in Czech cities since 2006. The Karel Komárek Foundation Award 2016 is the fifth year of the architectural competition organized under the foundation.
