Prague - Sixty young architects will compete tonight for the title of the best emerging architect in the Young Architect Award competition. The fourth year of the competition for creators under 33 years old aimed to connect ambitious architects with conservative conservationists. The main theme was the search for the ideal form of public space in a historical context.

In collaboration with the National Heritage Institute, specific locations in Prague, Brno, Ostrava, and Liberec were selected. These were areas currently problematic or locations that the residents of these cities perceive sensitively. In Ostrava, for example, young architects addressed the site of the former slaughterhouse, where today there is an undeveloped area that serves in part as a parking lot. In Liberec, they focused on the historical center - Sokolovské Square. From the Prague projects, for instance, the Žižkov Freight Station or the former Kotlárna Hall in Prague - Karlín were addressed, which is the largest preserved industrial functionalist building in the capital.
This year's edition saw young architects from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Belgium apply. The best submitted works were selected by a professional jury.
Last year, young architects focused on the issues of contemporary urbanization. In their projects, they tried to connect public space, urban development, natural elements, and new buildings. Out of 128 projects from architects from 14 countries around the world, three graduates of Czech universities and one Slovenian architect placed in the top positions in four categories.
