How can the area of the winter stadium on Prague's Štvanice be best revived or how to solve the surroundings of Brno's Main Train Station, which is a protected heritage zone? Young architects from the Czech Republic and abroad will seek answers to these and other questions in the next edition of the prestigious competition Young Architect Award 2012. The theme of this year's competitive showcase is the search for the ideal form of public space in a historical context. The international competition for young architectural talents begins in Prague on Tuesday, February 21, 2012, with the opening of the exhibition of last year's successful works.
The 4th year of the exhibition of work by the young generation of architects under 33 years old, titled Young Architect Award 2012, connects two "incompatible camps" of ambitious architects and conservative heritage protectors. The participants are tasked with addressing the challenges of public spaces burdened by historical ties. In collaboration with the National Heritage Institute, specific locations in Prague, Brno, Ostrava, and Liberec have been selected. These topics are current or problematic, or they pertain to specific locations that are perceived sensitively in these cities. "An integral part of the country's cultural, architectural, and technical wealth is also industrial heritage, so young architects do not have to focus solely on enhancing the historical cores of cities," explains one of the jury members, Petr Lešek from PROJEKTIL ARCHITEKTI. According to the rules, it is also possible to submit proposals for revitalizations or conversions of industrial buildings.
"The entry of young architects into professional life is currently challenging. On the other hand, we know how necessary their fresh energy is. The Young Architect Award competition gives young architects the opportunity to showcase their qualities," adds Petr Lešek. Similarly, the company BETON BROŽ sees supporting young architects as essential, having entered this year's Young Architect Award as a general partner. "The young architects' competition deserves our support for two reasons. As a progressive company, we naturally closely monitor trends in construction and architecture. The innovative works and unconventional ideas from young architects can serve as inspiration and a stimulus for innovations for us. We were also very intrigued by the topic of the Young Architect Award, as our products are often an integral part of public spaces,” says Libor Brož, owner and director of BETON BROŽ.
The competition will kick off with an exhibition of works from the previous year, with the opening taking place on February 21, 2012, at 1:30 PM in the Atrium at Archicafé, FA ČVUT in Prague, with the participation of the rector of ČVUT Václav Havlíček, the dean of FA ČVUT Zdeňka Zavřela, and the dean of FSv ČVUT Alena Kohoutková.
The results of the Young Architect Award 2012 will be announced on September 19, 2012, at the FOR ARCH construction fair in Prague.
