The Zlín city hall announced a competition for the restoration of the park behind the theater

Zlín - The Zlín City Hall announced an architectural and landscape competition for the restoration of the park behind the theater in the center of the regional city. The deadline for submitting proposals is May 10, the city hall spokesman Zdeněk Dvořák informed CTK in a press release today.

"The current appearance of the park is very uninviting, but it was similar before the transformation of Komenský Park. The park behind the theater has great potential due to its connections to all the stages of our theater," said Mayor Jiří Korec (ANO). He expects that after revitalization, the space will be used not only by the theater and its visitors but also by others for relaxation and entertainment.

The aim of the competition is not only to restore the park but also the surroundings of the theater. Emphasis is placed on preserving greenery. "We want to transform the area so that it can also host cultural and social events, such as performances in the open air. Therefore, part of it will be modified to accommodate a solid stage with seating, which can be used, for example, during the Setkání Stretnutie festival," said Ivo Tuček, head of the spatial planning department of the city hall.

The director of the City Theater Zlín and city councilor Petr Michálek would appreciate the enhancement of the entrances to the small stages, namely the Workshops and Studio Z, which are increasingly popular.

The costs of transforming the park are estimated in the millions of crowns, and additional funds may be required for the transformation of Divadelní Street. "The actual implementation could begin as early as next year," Dvořák stated.

The city hall recently selected the winner of the architectural-urban competition for the revitalization of Míru Square. The winning project, along with other proposals, can be seen at the Zlín Castle from today until April 14. A total of 24 proposals were submitted to the competition, and the design by the Brno studio P. P. Architects won.

In the first phase, emphasis will be placed on the construction of an underground parking lot, new surfaces, furniture, and the creation of a smaller colonnade, which will also have a stage or space for outdoor exhibitions. The second phase also considers partial construction in the area. The restoration of the square could start in 2022, with the first phase expected to last about a year. The project is expected to cost hundreds of millions of crowns.

"With the winning proposal, we can already initiate concrete negotiations about the possibilities of co-financing the first phase of the square's reconstruction from private sources," Korec stated. Private investors are expected to participate in the construction of the underground parking lot.
