Since Saturday, September 23, 2006, an exhibition dedicated to the work of the French engineer Jean Prouvé has been taking place at the Vitra Design Museum. The traveling event titled “Jean Prouvé. The Poetics of Technical Objects” is co-hosted by the Tokyo Design Museum Akihabara and the Deutsche Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt am Main. From the press release, we quote: “Prouvé can inspire us as someone who successfully combined creativity, entrepreneurship, and industrial aesthetics. In his work, he merged craft with industry and design with architecture. With each subsequent design, he pushed his experiences further - as an art-deco artist blacksmith, as a manufacturer and designer of furniture and architecture, and finally as a highly regarded educator. He did not seek his own handwriting, but logical responses to the required function and available means. This explains the authenticity and unmistakable expression of his works. Prouvé is today valued as one of the most progressive designers in 20th century architecture and furniture design. He developed lightweight demountable constructions - from small houses to large halls - multifunctional façade systems as well as adjustable or dismountable furniture based on his rigorous manufacturing and technical experiences. With the growing interest in technology, Prouvé's inventions in the field of building construction and industrially manufactured furniture have reentered public awareness in recent years.” Video from the opening on September 22, 2006 - here.
