Alvar Aalto

The Role of Folk Tradition in Japanese and Finnish Architecture in the Works of Alvar Aalto in the 1930s.

A Brno reprise of the exhibition prepared by the Architecture Cabinet in Ostrava in collaboration with GVUO and Aalto University in Espoo, Finland. The exhibition focuses on the lesser-known and slightly overlooked period in the work of architect and designer Alvar Aalto, during which a significant interest in traditional Japanese architecture emerged in the 1930s.

Alvar Aalto was a Finnish architect and designer whose work had an extraordinarily wide range not only in the field of architecture but also in design - furniture, glass, and jewelry. His fascination with traditional Finnish architecture, cosmopolitan nature, and search for balance between man, nature, and buildings led him to Japanese building tradition, to which he fully succumbed.
Aalto, inspired by the ideas and ideals of traditional Japanese architecture, sought a return to nature and humanity during standardization. Humanization of modern architecture, individualism, and quality craftsmanship are ideals that are reflected in his buildings from the 1930s, linked with Finnish tradition. This episode undoubtedly significantly influenced the work of one of the most important figures in modern architecture and art of the 20th century.

Opening of the exhibition: Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at 6:00 PM at the Architecture Gallery Brno, Starobrněnská 18. The exhibition will run until August 13, 2017, and the admission is voluntary.

The exhibition was created as part of the international festival of architecture, design, and art Archikultura 2017 organized by the Ostrava Architecture Cabinet.
