Zdeněk Plesník

The exhibition marking the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Zlín architect and native of Valašské Meziříčí, Zdeněk Plesník, will showcase his key works in the Zlín region and beyond.
The festive opening will take place on November 20, 2014, at 5:00 PM on the second floor of the Museum and Gallery Center in the newly reconstructed wing of the Žerotín Castle. The exhibition will last until January 16, 2015.

Zdeněk Plesník (1914-2003) is among our leading architects of the second half of the 20th century. He was born in Valašské Meziříčí and after studying at the secondary woodworking school, he continued his architecture studies in Prague at UMPRUM under Pavel Janák from 1933 to 1937, and he was also a student of Professor Gočár. He was only able to fully complete his studies in 1947, as during the war he had to go through a concentration camp after the Nazis closed universities. His name is primarily associated with Zlín, where he designed several types of block residential buildings and factories. He was active elsewhere in the republic and abroad, where he designed numerous industrial buildings, public administrative buildings, schools, and family houses. The most famous realizations are the villas for travelers Miroslav Zikmund (1953-1954) and Jiří Hanzelka (1953/4-1956), and for composer Zdeněk Liška (1956-1959). These are remarkable in terms of both architecture and interior furnishings. Other projects include the MEZ Hulín engineering plant, Centroprojekt in Zlín, the observatory in Valašské Meziříčí, and a radio transmitter and printing house in Beijing. For the realization of the OP garment factory in Prostějov, he received the State Prize in 1963.

The exhibition has been prepared by FOIBOS BOOKS, s.r.o. and the Kotěra Center for Architecture, o.p.s. with financial support and in collaboration with the statutory city of Zlín, the city of Valašské Meziříčí, TOSHULIN a.s., CENTROPROJEKT GROUP a.s., the municipality of Březůvky, and the Regional Gallery of Fine Arts in Zlín p.o. as a traveling exhibition that will also be presented next year in Prague, and if there is interest, in other cities enriched by Zdeněk Plesník’s architecture.
