The Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava, a contributory organization of the Moravian-Silesian region, has once again partnered with SPOK - the Association for Ostrava Culture to take part in the international architecture festival this year.

Ostrava - On Thursday, April 4, 2013, at 6 PM, three architectural exhibitions will be ceremoniously opened - Le Corbusier / Chandigarh, Furniture for Historical Theaters and Architecture Resonating with Music at the House of Arts in Ostrava on Jurečkova Street 9. The opening will be led by Jiří Jůza, the director of the Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava (GVUO), and will be attended by Anna Olszewska, the Consul General of the Republic of Poland, Ing. arch. Maciej Motak, a representative of SARP Krakow, Jaroslaw Denisiuk, director of Galeria EL from Elbląg, and Milan Pitlach. The exhibitions are part of the 5th edition of the international festival of architecture, design, and art under the new title Archikultura 2013.

The first exhibition titled Le Corbusier / Chandigarh, which will be on display until May 12, presents the work of the internationally recognized architect born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret Gris. The recently past 125 years since the birth of the "Pope of Modern Architecture" has inspired the curators of the Architecture Cabinet at the House of Arts in Ostrava to join a series of activities held worldwide aimed at commemorating the personality of this genius architect and bringing his unique work closer to the public. Few creators have influenced their era in any artistic field as significantly as Le Corbusier did in 20th-century architecture.

"The Ostrava presentation focuses on Chandigarh, the 'new' capital of the Indian state of Punjab. A city that, similarly to Niemeyer’s Brazil, was built from scratch," says Tadeáš Goryczka, the exhibition organizer, continuing: "With this chosen theme and a similar presentation format that showcases photographs by Milan Pitlach and sketches by Le Corbusier, we want to commemorate the five-year anniversary of the Architecture Cabinet's activities at the House of Arts in Ostrava as part of the Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava."

The next exhibition entitled Furniture for Historical Theaters, which can also be viewed until May 12, will introduce the public to the work of architect and designer Radim Ulmann. Radim Ulmann is the author of a number of realized designs as well as unrealized prototypes for Czech theaters. For prominent Czech historical theaters, such as the Estates Theatre in Prague, he designed historic paraphrases of seats that blend with the original interior concepts. He is also perfectly capable of designing interior furnishings for contemporary theaters. He is the author of the furnishings for Klimeš Theatre in Most and the interior of the Jiří Myron Theatre in Ostrava.
The exhibition will present Ulmann's theater projects, including the most significant and technically advanced, an occasional auditorium seating in the Ledebour Gardens beneath Prague Castle.

"The brief required seating for 250 spectators that could be removed after the performance so that the garden remained in its original form. Only a small space under the garden staircase was reserved for storing the seats," Goryczka explains, continuing "Ulmann designed highly durable metal seats that could be easily recessed into the garden's lawn or transported and stacked."

The final exhibition named Architecture Resonating with Music, which will last until May 26, will present designs for buildings intended for concert purposes. The exhibition will showcase a collection of photographic collages highlighting around 40 representative objects from around the world dedicated to music. It will clearly present different approaches of significant creators and architectural teams such as Frank Gehry, Bernard Tschumi, Massimiliano Fuksas, Coop Himmelb(l)au, OMA, UN Studio, Daniel Libeskind, Renzo Piano, Rafael Moneo and others. The exhibition will also include models and projects by Eva Jiřičná and Jan Kaplický.

"The Czech premiere of the exhibition is a modest contribution and inspiration for ongoing discussions about the establishment of a separate home for the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra in Ostrava," adds Goryczka.

Admission to individual exhibitions is 20 CZK full price and 10 CZK reduced price. Group admission is 50 CZK full price and 25 CZK reduced price, while entry is free on Sundays. The exhibition halls are open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM. The exhibitions are held with financial support from the statutory city of Ostrava.

Other exhibitions as part of the Archikultura 2013 festival will also be on display in Ostrava at the Exhibition Hall Sokolská 26, the Ostrava Museum, the Antiquarian and Club Fiducia, the Slezskoostravská Gallery, Gallery Kruh, Gallery Cooltour, the LIBREX Book House, the Library of the City of Ostrava, and the building of Otazník by the Intoza company.
