Vienna's Center for Architecture (AzW) and the German Museum of Architecture (DAM) have jointly prepared the exhibition "Think Global, Build Social! Building for a Better World". Both institutions are jointly addressing the question of the social responsibility of contemporary architecture. The exhibition showcases not only projects from the Third World but also from Vienna.

"Think Global, Build Social!" presents current examples of alternative, socially engaged architecture that seeks to improve the living conditions of people in regions of Asia, Africa, and Latin America with minimal financial resources and a strong personal initiative and creativity. Curator Andres Lepik has compiled a selection of projects, including schools, public institutions, and residential buildings. The showcased realizations were often created in close collaboration with their future users and by utilizing local building traditions. They do not overlook the needs of those for whom they are built and keep in mind the mutual exchange of knowledge among the participating parties in the project. In various projects and approaches, many commonalities can be found. The exhibition shows that there is a movement in contemporary architecture that addresses socio-social issues of global society.

The Vienna exhibition is supplemented by projects with Austrian participation. Baerbel Mueller leads a laboratory at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, where she examines spatial, infrastructural, ecological, and cultural phenomena of sub-Saharan Africa. The Technical University of Vienna, with Peter Fattinger, is working in the Design-Build studio. The Art University in Linz focuses on alternative energy use in areas with limited access to public infrastructure through its BASEhabitat studio. The architectural studio gaupenraub +/- is developing a series of admirable projects for the homeless in Vienna. The association s2arch has realized over 40 social projects in South Africa in the past ten years.
