Karlovy Vary - A traveling exhibition about unique villas built by prominent architects in the region began on Thursday at the Karlovy Vary Museum. The exhibition "Famous Villas of the Karlovy Vary Region" will also be seen by people in Sokolov, Cheb, and other towns after Karlovy Vary. The same-named publication was presented with the opening of the exhibition. The museum collaborated with the National Heritage Institute, various institutions, organizations, and individuals in the preparation of both the exhibition and the book. This was reported by the museum director Romana Borusíková. The exhibition documents photographs, drawings, and other materials related to the most significant villas and their stories, including the fates of their builders and owners. The public will get acquainted with both well-known and unjustly forgotten architects. Research results related to the topic, involving Luboš Zeman, Zbyňek Černý, Michal Rund, and Jana Horváthová, will also be presented. "Many of the villas are located in the Westend of Karlovy Vary. The Becher and Lützow villas are also included," said museum historian Stanislav Burachovič. The builders of a large number of villas were initially representatives of the social elite, wealthy burghers, and entrepreneurs. Hoteliers, renowned doctors, and the builders themselves were also present. According to Borusíková, the local environment leaned towards imperial Vienna and the neighboring German regions. It is therefore not surprising that notable Viennese creators, such as Ferdinand Fellner, Hermann Helmer, and Arnold Heymann, left their works here. The most characteristic architectural styles for spa towns are neoclassicism and historicism, she noted. In addition to Karlovy Vary, valuable buildings representing a high standard of villa architecture from the second half of the 19th century to the present can also be found in several other towns. Among others, in Ostrov, Nejdku, Jáchymov, Kraslice, Sokolov, Cheb, and Aš. Even in a small village like Velká Hleďsebe near Mariánské, one can find an extraordinarily interesting villa.
